There is nothing wise about ignoring your wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the permanent third molars with the first permanent molars erupting approximately at age 6, the second molars erupting approximately age 12, and the third molars, at age 17-18.
Hence the term, “wisdom teeth” when you have, theoretically, reached an age of greater wisdom.
There is often inadequate room for these teeth to erupt (come into the mouth) to be in function. When there is inadequate space for the wisdom teeth to erupt, a series of complications, and undesirable consequences may result.
Left untreated, these unerupted teeth may cause infection to the gum or bone, and even result in decay or loss of the adjacent teeth or bone. Early diagnosis and intervention is highly recommended to avoid future complications. Impacted wisdom teeth are defined as the third molars being embedded in the gum or bone and/or blocked out by adjacent teeth and bone, with no potential to erupt into function. Dr. Sara is uniquely qualified to evaluate these “impacted” wisdom teeth and she can make the appropriate early diagnosis and advise as to options which include, just monitoring these teeth. At times, there is sufficient room in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to erupt into a functional position. Other times, Dr. Sara can predict that the wisdom teeth have no chance of erupting and hence, early intervention is critical to avoid potential complications.
